RAF ACC Names

Alex,

Thank you for your service!  I'm from Wausau, WI in the US, but sponsor the RAF ACC group on MSN.  I've had an interest in the "cars" for quite a few years and would like to help you in any way possible.

First off, it seems that the early car names were prefixed "HMAC" or "His Majesty's Armoured Car".  To continue the practice would be great, if your CO could be convinced - tell him "Cass" would have approved - Sqn Ldr Michael Casano, famous or infamous of No.2 ACC.

Anyway, I'll list some Rolls Royce Armoured Car names that I know of, along with the Company, where known.

1. HMAC Cleopatra - RR No.4 ACC circa early 1920s

2. HMAC Jackal - RR No.1 ACC circa late 1930s

3. Cerberus - RR No.1 ACC circa 1937

4. Superb - RR, Iraq - circa early 1920s

5. Thunderbolt - No.2 ACC - WWII Fordson, Mr. Ivor Chester, Car Commander

6. Waverly - Lancia Armoured Tender "HMAT" (His Majesty's Armoured Tender)

7. Ivanhoe - Lancia Armoured Tender

8. Wilson - Lancia Armoured Car, No. 1 ACC

9. Beatty - Lancia Armoured Tender, No. 1 ACC

10. Acasta - RR

11. Adder - RR

12. Bison - RR

13. Chatham - RR

14. Cheetah - RR

15. Condor - RR

16. Desmond - RR

17. Eagle - RR

18. Explorer - RR

19. Golden Eagle - RR

20. Hawk - RR

21. Jaguar - RR

22. Orion - RR

23. Panther - RR

24. Tigris - RR, likely No.1 ACC

25. Shark - RR

26. Victory - RR

27. Drake - Lancia

28. Fisher - Lancia

29. Furious - Lancia

30. Polaris - Lancia

31. Rigel - Lancia

32. Sirius - Lancia

33. Watson - Lancia

34. HMAC Terror - RR, No. 4 ACC, 1922

35. HMAC Orion - RR, No. 4 ACC, 1925

36. HMAC Cyclops - RR

37. HMAC Avenger - RR

38. HMAC Buffalo - RR No. 1 ACC

39. HMAC Conquerer - RR No. 1 ACC

40. HMAC Euphrates - RR No. 4 ACC

I hope this helps ... I'd be very interested in hearing the end result.

Armoured Car Names

Dear All,
I am currently serving as OC B Flt, 34 Sqn RAF Regt at Basrah COB, Iraq. Since our deployment in August, the Sqn has been the first RAF Regt Sqn to be equipped with the new Mastiff Armoured Vehicle. You will have undoubtably seen these monsters on the news; a half way point between the Snatch Armoured Landrover and a Tank! I have recently been discussing with the other Flt Cdrs on the Sqn and to a lesser extent the boss about naming our new vehicles after the original Rolls Royce armoured cars of 1 & 2 ACC. I\'m sure we will receive no end of stick from 1 and II Sqn RAF Regt, but it really does seem fitting. Any help you could provide us with in getting a list of the original names would be most welcome.
Thanks
Alex Watson
